Christmas in Manchester

Family and friends in Manchester, England would love to have you visit them at Christmas time. Here are just some of the things this football town offers you during the holidays.

Manchester, England, is well known for their football teams and the city comes alive during football season and at Christmas time. There is plenty to do in the city leading up to Christmas Day and that week in between Christmas and New Years. But going to the city during this time of year can be daunting if you’re not ready for the fun you are going to have.

Manchester Christmas markets

There are numerous Christmas markets set up throughout the city during the holiday season. The markets are at Albert Square, St. Ann’s Square, Exchange Street, New Cathedral Street, and Brazennose Street. Each of these markets is set up with retail chalets in the German market tradition that contain a variety of gifts, food, and drinks. There is even a multilingual talking reindeer for the kids to enjoy. There is even an ice skating rink at Piccadilly Gardens set up for some winter fun.

The Manchester Marquee is hosting a big bash

If you want to enjoy a really different type of Christmas party this year, the ‘Party At The Pyramids’ at the Manchester Marquee is just for you. The 2008 holiday season will see a slice of Egypt enter the British countryside. Guests to the party can enjoy exotic food and settings as well as belly dancers, fire eaters, and other cool entertainment options. There is a disco available as well as fairground attractions, party photographer, a silent auction, and casino games. All of the money that is earned at the blackjack and roulette tables goes to the Stop Hunger charity.

Enjoy the light switch-on ceremony in Manchester

The citizens of Manchester prepare the city for the holiday season in November and at the end of the month they have a light switch-on ceremony to usher in the Christmas season. The ceremony always includes carol-singers, other live entertainment and superb fireworks. Shortly after the light switch-on ceremony the markets open for business and everyone begins shopping for Christmas.

Visitors to the city should be aware that a couple of days after Christmas many shops and restaurants are closed which may make the city boring to visitors. Manchester does perk up right before New Year’s so if you are going to be there long enough, you will be able to experience bringing in the New Year Manchester style.
