Trim the Perfect Tree

Perfect Christmas TreeIn no time at all, people will be going to stores or going to a tree lot to pick out the perfect artificial or real tree to decorate their homes for Christmas. Let’s look at Christmas trees and what you’ll need to know to decorate the perfect tree.

The Romans

Something similar to Christmas trees has been around as long as the Romans who decorated fir trees outdoors in the forest to honour the god Saturn from December 17-23. This practice and others, around the celebration called Saturnalia, are where we get many of our Christmas practices. Another story around fir trees is that all the trees in the forest sprouted green leaves at the exact time of Christ’s birth.

History

The exact custom of decorating trees for Christmas was attributed to Martin Luther who was so moved by the stars in the sky that he lighted candles on a fir tree to remind himself and little children that God was coming down to earth to save them.

In England

In England, it was Prince Albert who popularized the trimming of the Christmas tree in 1841 when he decorated a lovely tree for his children at Windsor Castle. People were inspired by that at began decorating trees with ornaments and other lovely trim.

Unique Trees

Everyone’s tree is unique but if you are buying Christmas trimmings, think about buying one or more strings of colored lights, which may be of one color or of many colors and may be blinking. Wrap your tree in a string of something, like garland, decorated strings of beads or even popcorn. You can buy decorations that surround the tree and are all the same or similar decorations or you may buy a variety of decorations. Making decorations is a big hit, too. Don’t forget about a tree topper, which is usually an angel but can be something like a Santa Claus, too.

Artificial Trees

Artificial trees can be packed away for years to come but live trees are generally just good for the season. Pick out a healthy tree that isn’t losing its needles when you buy it. Put it in a tree stand that can be filled with water to keep the base nourished throughout the rest of the season. Check the water level periodically to make sure it has water in it.

Tree DecorationsWhile trees used to be decorated with candles, it is a very big fire hazard and is not recommended. Enjoy your lighted tree with artificial lighting safely all season long.

Tree Bags

When getting rid of your live tree, place a large outdoor garbage bag around the base. Draw it up around the stripped tree when you’re ready to haul it outdoors. That way most of the needles will fall in the bag and you won’t be vacuuming needles for weeks.
